What’s on our nightstands, in our tote bags, and s What’s on our nightstands, in our tote bags, and stacked a little precariously on our desks? From books that attempt to hold the last 500 years of humanity to stories that linger in ivy-covered hallways and snow-dusted afternoons, here’s what the PA&L team can’t stop reading right now.

“The Burning Earth” by Sunil Amrith
“It has been a long time since I read a book so ambitious in its reach. In just 400 pages, Amrith succeeded in telling the whole history of the last 500 years of humanity. All of my questions were answered at the end, except one, how was one person able to store all of these information in his brain?” —Sony Ton-Aime, Executive Director

“Spoiled Milk” by Avery Curran
“I picked this up expecting something unsettling, but I wasn’t prepared for how deeply it would burrow under my skin. A Queer gothic horror at its most decadent and decayed—ivy-covered buildings, obsessive friendships, intellectual hunger curdling into something feral. Curran captures that dark academic ache so well: the longing to be brilliant, to be chosen, to belong inside a crumbling institution that might swallow you whole.”—Jordan Snowden, Marketing Specialist

“Oblivion” by David Foster Wallace
“Even though I've long considered David Foster Wallace a favorite (I know, I know), I haven't spent any real time with his work since grad school. Reading these later stories, I'm struck by how much I still love his labyrinthine digressions and footnotes, his near-scientific analyses of human emotion, and his often truly startling turns of phrase. It might not be the most uplifting choice for a snowy February in Pittsburgh, though!” —Nina Sabak, Program and Events Manager

“I Am Agatha” by Nancy Foley
“This book reads like a movie and I tore through it. The narrator’s voice is so distinctive. The landscape of rural New Mexico in the 70s is so vivid, and the plot’s twists and turns were both shocking and believable somehow. It introduced me to the painter Agnes Martin. I’ll read anything Nancy Foley writes from now on.” —Micaela Corn, Ticketing & Patron Experience Manager
